Parchment Pattern
for
April, 1999

Easter!  What a joyous time!  The winter is coming to a close and the fresh smells of Spring are upon us.
We can rejoice in the salvation given to the Jewish people with passover and the rebirth of life in Christ, Jesus!
So many symbols have come to be recognized with this time of rebirth.  For this April and Easter season I thought I would try a 3-d design of my own making.  The blooming flowers to represent the blooming of faith, and in the season that will come. The butterfly on the side is the symbol of our own rebirth and the box can hold all your personal treasures or can even be made into a beautiful music box. (this is what I did).

  * note:  you will need some extra supplies to complete this project.  These include a paper mache
5" x 4" x 2" deep oval shaped box (though you can use other shapes you will need to alter the pattern for other shapes)
You will also need an acrylic paint to paint the box (preferable a textured paint.)  And also a piece of felt to line the box.

I hope you enjoy this fun pattern.

Tracing:

 1.   Use white ink to trace the flowers  and exterior boarders of the box top
 2.   Use Green ink on outline of all the leaves and stems of flowers
 3.   Use  use gold ink on all lines of butterfly

Embossing:
 1.  Emboss using fine embossing tool on all traced lines on both the box and the butterfly.
 2.  Emboss using large bowl embossing tool the circles of the butterfly and the inside of each flower on the box
      top.

Painting:
   Box top
  1.  Use green pinta-perla for all the leaves (Paint on outside surface)
  2.  Use yellow pinta-perla for the flower centers where indicated. (Paint on outside surface)

Butterfly:
  1.  The outer area of the wings should be painted in black
  2.  The next area inward in Pinta perla Blue
  3.  The inner areas white with some light fine lines of blue
  4.   The small dots on wings use white paint.

*  note:  The butterfly of course can be done in any flavors of your choice.  I have done it as a blue swallow tail
and as a Monarch Butterfly.  Be creative!

Dorsing:
 1.  Use purple dorsing crayons to the center and green dorsing crayons to the outside on the box top
      outward to blend together.

Perforations:
 Box Top:
Use 4-prong perforation tool to the grid on the box top where indicated and cut out the x's from these areas.
Use 2- prong  tool around the edge of the box top or the semi-circle tool to go around the outer edges

   Butterfly:
Use 2-prong tool to go around the outer edge of the butterfly and tear away excess.

Box Preparation:

1.  Using textured paint of your choice (I used a pastel green), paint all outer parts of the box.  Apply a second coat
if necessary.  (You may want to use a white primer paint before applying the textured paint (or other acrylic
     Paint.
2. Use the outside edge of the box bottom to draw a pencil line onto the felt .  Cut out 2 pieces of this shape.
One of these will be use for inside bottom and the other for the inside top of the box.

3.  Measure a 2" strip for the  inside of the box.  Cut strips to line the inside of the box.
4.  Glue the oval to the bottom of the box.  Spread an even moderate layer of glue to secure this piece.
5.  Glue the 3" strip along the inside of the box.  Be generous with the glue on the sides to insure a good fit.

Assembly:

1.  To secure the finished parchment pieces to the box top use double sided mounting tape to the 4 outer sides
and center of the back sides.  I used mounting buttons that allowed for 1/8" setting above the box top.
2.  Bend up the wings of the butterfly so that the center of the butterfly can be secured.
3.  Secure the butterfly to the side near the leaves of the box using mounting tape or a glue gun.

Even though this pattern and design is for making the decorative box as described above.  The parchment craft
pieces can of course for other projects, anything from greeting cards to where ever your imagination will take
   you.
