Birds of the Air

"The 'Birds of the Air' don't toil or reap, yet our Father feeds them."
This block represents one of the gentle Scripture reminders in the New Testament.  "The Lilies of the Field". (Matt 6:24-29).

There are several blocks that share this name or design. I have chosen what I consider the easiest way to compile this block into an easy to make block.  The finished block will measure 12 1/2".

This block only requires two different colors.  Color Preferences shoul be a light /medium for the background (Fabric A) and a dark fabrics for the bird (Fabric B).

Fabric A Fabric B
12 - 2 1/2" squares 12 - 3" square
12 - 3" squares
Step #1.

For this step you will be making half square triangles from the 3" light/medium and dark squares.

1.Using the 12 dark 3" squares and the 12 light/medium 3" square, place one light and onedarl right sides together.    You will have 12 pairs sew each pair on the diagonal.  Draw a line on the diagonal of each pair and stitch 1/4" to each of the diagonal line drawn on each pair (as shown in diagram # 1).

 diagram # 1

2.  Cut apart on the diagonal line.
3.  Press open each half square triangle with the seams toward the darker fabric.
4.  Square up each square to 2 1/2".
5.  You should now have 24 -  2 1/2" half square triangles.

Step #2.

Using the finished block at the top of the page as a guide sew together the block row by row.  First across (do not break your threads). Then up and down...

This simple to make block also is a symbol of how we should keep our lives simple and open to Our Lord God.
