*please note that on these cutting instructions I am providing cutting instructions a bit larger for several of the triangular pieces. This will allow for easier sizing to the correct size when squared up.
fabric and cutting requirements:
background color
cross color
| 19 - 2 1/8" squares | 10 - 2 1/8" squares |
| 1 - 5" x 7 1/2" rectangle | 1 - 5" x 7 1/2" rectangle |
| 2 - 2 3/4" squares cut on diagonal | .2 - 3" squares |
| 2 -3" squares | . |
Step # 1. Making half square triangles.
1. Using the 5" x 7 1/2" rectangles, place them front sides together. Using a pencil, draw lines both vertically and horizontally every 2 1/2". Then draw lines on the diagonal as shown in the diagram below. Sew 1/4" to each side of the lines. Cut apart on the lines.
diagram #1
This will give you 6 have 2 1/4" square triangles.
2. Press open so that the seam is toward the dark fabric.
3. Square up you pieces to 2 1/8" *please make note
of the squared up size.
Step #2. Quater Triangles:
1. Place the 3" squares fronts together. Draw line on diagonal.
Sew 1 /4" inch to each side of the drawn line. Cut
apart on the diagonal line. Press seam
toward the darker fabric.
diagram # 2
2. Cut across the diagonal of this square. When you have cut both newly created half square triangles you will have for quaters.
3. Using the 2 3/4" squares you cut on the diagonal sew together
one of the quarter pieces to each of these diagonally cut pieces to form
a square that looks like this:
diagram # 3
4. Square up to 2 1/8". *please note that these pieces are made a bit larger to insure proper squared up size.
Step #3 Block Assembly:
1. Using the diagram of the finished block a the top of the page lay out all your 2 1/8" pieces. Sew the horizontal rows across without breaking your thread. The repeat this process doing the vertical rows.
2. Press your block.
3. Square up to 12 1/2"
* PERSONAL NOTE*
I just finished making this lovely block for
myself and I just love how it is going to look in a quilt that I have planned
to be making in the very near future.
