Cross and Crown

This block represents the cross that Christ carried as well as the Crown of Thorns that he wore to the cross.
This is a 5 patch block that will measure 12 1/2" unfinished size when completed.


Fabric and cutting requirements:

      Foreground Fabric                               Background Fabric
 
2 - 5 1/2" square cut on diagonal 4 - 3" squares
1 - 3" square 4 - 5 1/2" x 3" strips
4 - 4" squares 4 - 4" squares
* note: some of these pieces may be cut a bit larger than necessary to allow for squaring up properly with ease.

Step #1  Making Split half square triangles (aka quarter triangles)

1.  Place the 3 1/2" squares fronts together. Draw line on diagonal. Sew 1 /4" inch to each side of the drawn line. Cut  apart on the diagonal line. Press seam toward  the darker fabric.

3.  Square up these half square triangles to 3 1/2" each.

3.  Cut across the diagonal of these squares. When you have cut both newly created half square triangles you will have eight quarter triangles (split halfs)..

3.  Press open with seams to the darker fabric.
 

Step # 2  Block assembly

1. Sew  together the 5 1/2" triangle to two of the quater pieces along with one of the 3" background squares as shown in the diagram below. (make 4 of these units).

2. Square up this section to 5 1/2".

3. Lay out these completed sections and sew together and demonstrated in the illustration below.

4. Square up your block to 12 1/2" (raw).
