Block of the Month

December 2001





    Well here we are, the end of the year 2001.  The new cenutry is now well on it's way and we have the opportunity to see so much in the youth of this century!  And in December we have so many odds and ends that have to be done... Of course the parties and shopping leave us will all kinds of little note in our pockets or purses....  the odds and ends of out shopping needs.  So when I was trying to find the perfect block for this time of the year all those odds and ends just came to mind so this month's blok is:

Odds and Ends




Step # 1.  Fabric requirements:
1 - 26" x 2" - strip of medium purple.
1 - 36"x 2" -  strip light blue .............   cut strip into 2 pieces one will be 26 " the other w11 be 16"
2 - 3 1/2" - squares light blue ............
1 - 4" square light blue.......................
1 - 4" square medium dark purple ....
1 - 16" x 2" strip of black..................
 

Step # 2.  making pieces from strips:

  1. Sew together the 26" strips (fronts together). ..... (Medium purple)
  2.  Press with darker color upward.
  3. Cut into 6 1/2" pieces.....
  4. Sew together 16" strips (fronts together).........
  5. cut into 8 - 2"  pieces to make a 4 piece square as shown:  .
 

Step # 3. Making half square triangles.
 

1.  Using the 4" squares of ....and 4" square of ...(medium dark),  Follow  diagram #1 to make half
     square triangles.  Mark a pencil line across the diagonal.   Sew 1/4" on each side of the pencil mark.
    Cut apart on the pencil line.  Press each square to the darker fabric.  Square up each square to 3 1/2" each.

2.  Make half square triangles using these color combinations:
     all of these half squares are made using 4" squares and will measure 3/12" after squaring up.
 

Step # 4.  Assembly
  1. Sew together 2 of the 4 patch units and one of the 6 1/2" units together to form this 12 1/2" piece:

  Make 2 - units
 2.  Sew together half square triangles to 3 1/2" squares as shown below:
square up to 6 1/2"

 3.  Add to each side of  the above square unit the remaining 6 1/2" bars as shown below:

 4.  Sew each completed unit together as shown below:

When completed square up to 12 1/2' .   This completes your block.
