Reflections
On this Sunday’s Readings

? Wisdom: This reading from the Old Testament reminds us that a vocation is always rooted in a process of discernment that takes years of prayer. We pray for the guidance of the Spirit, and we take counsel from trusted believers so that we can perceive what the Lord intends for us. We pray to discover what the Lord desires of us, how we can best serve, given our human talents and limitations.
? Philemon: Paul encourages Philemon to understand Onesimus through the lens of faith. A vocation, a call from the Lord, needs the encouragement of the community of believers. Church leadership must be nurtured in relationships that help people to discover that they are called by name to offer their personal gifts in loving service. Personal encouragement is always the key to vocation work.
? Luke: Vocation encouragement always involves a reassessment of our lives and priorities in the light of the Cross. We are invited to adjust our plans according to the criterion of the Cross and its emphasis on generous service, a faith-filled channeling of our personal hopes and dreams toward deeper and greater goals.
