Block of the Month
for
February 2000

Fulton Star



    This is the second block for the 'Stars of the Year 2000' series.  This star pattern is one that I was unfamiliar with until justs recently and I fell in love with it.  It is a bit more complicated than many of the blocks I have presented in the past but I believe you will like it as much as I have.
 

Fabric Requirements:

1 - 4 1/2" square = .........466 - 3" squares = ........ 4 - 3" squares = ......6 - 3" squares = 
. 4 4 - 3" squares.........................2.........................................   .....2 - 5" squares
2 - 5" squares  = ........
 
 

Step # 1  Make half square triangles

1.  Following  diagram #1 to make half square triangles.  Mark a pencil line across the diagonal of the
     squares.  Sew 1/4" on each  side of the pencil mark. Cut apart on the pencil line.  Press each square to the
     darker fabric.

 2. Make half square triangles using:    2 - 5" squares  =   and    .2 - 5" squares = 

                                                                                                                       and

                                                               4 - 3" squares =       and      4 - 3" squares =

Step # 2.   Block Center

1.  Cut 2 - 3" squares of the   squares on the diagonal.  On the  draw pencil lines as shown below
     2 3/4" from each corner.

2.  With front sides together sew the triangles to the 4 1/2" square. Use the  the pencil line you drew, as your  ....guide.line by placing the long side of your triangle against this line.  Sew
     using a 1/4" seam allowance from this point.  Finger press open.

3.  Repeat the the step above to sew on all 4 sides.  Sew opsite sides first then repeat for the remaining two
     sides

4.   Turn completed piece over to the back side of the piece and cut off the excess fabric from the center
      fabric.  Be sure to leave you 1/4" seam allowance.

5.  Press this piece.  Square up to 4 1/2".

6. this makes the center of the block.

Step # 3   Flying Geese section:

1.  Using 4 - 3" squares of    and       and the  4- 3" squares of   and     make half
     square triangles.
2.  Sew half square triangles of like kind together so that the  triangle points come together at the
     center as shown below.   .........................                ......do this step with both color combinations.

3.   Sew each of these sections together as shown .  Make 4 section. 

4.  Square up this piece to 4 1/2".
 
 

Step # 4.  Outer corner squares:

1.  Using the   2 - 5" squares  =   and  .2 - 5" squares =      make 4 - half square triangles.

2. Using the half square triangle    mark a 2"  pencil line as shown: .

3.  Cut 2 -  on the diagonal to make 4 - triangles.  With fronts together lay triangle along the pencil line
     so the shorter sides wil face outward after being stitched with 1/4" seam line.   Fold open and press.  Each
     completed section should look like this:

Step # 5   Assembly of block:

1.  Set up blocks as follows:    Sew together first along the vertical rows then the horizontal rows.  Square up to
     12 1/2".
     this completes the February 2000 block of the month... Happy quilting!
