Quilt Block of the Month

January, 1999
Block # 2
Big Dipper
      With the cold winter nights as we stay warm in our homes, stars shine brightly outdoors.  So for these January
     days I have chosen some stars to brighten your days and nights.  The Big Dipper continues to be a constellation
     that guides many travelers through the night skies.
 
 

fabric requirements:

8 - 3 1/2" squares light
4 - 3 1/2" squares medium
4 - 3 1/2" squares dark
 
* please make note that many of the fabric requirement are cut a bit larger than actually needed.  This will make it easier to square up the various pieces in each block.

Step # 1  make half square triangles:
 

1.  Following  diagram #1 to make half square triangles.  Mark a pencil line across the diagonal.  Sew 1/4" on each
     side of the pencil mark. Cut apart on the pencil line.  Press each square to the darker fabric.  Square up each
     square to 2 1/2" each.
 2. Make 8 - dark to light  (use 4 light squares and 4 dark squares)
     Make 4 - light to medium light (use 2 light and 2 medium light squares)
 


 

Step # 2.

1.  Sew together two light to medium squares. Make two sets

2.  Repeat above step using light to dark squares.  Make two sets


 

Step # 3

1.  Sew all 4 units together as shown below to complete you Big Dipper Block.
2. Square up to 8 1/2".
