On July 4th we celebrate our "Independence Day".
So for us here in the USA what better block to start the
year out with than this, red, white and blue "July Forth" block.
For others around the world try this July block with your own national
colors.
* please make note that many of the fabric
requirement are cut a bit larger than actually needed. This will
make it easier to square up the various pieces in each block.
fabric requirements:
5 - 3 1/2" light squares
1 - 3" light square (cut on diagonal)
4 - 3 1/2" medium squares
1 - 3 1/2" dark square
1 - 3" dark square (cut on diagonal)
1 - 5" dark square (cut on diagonal)
1. Following diagram #1 to make half square triangles.
Mark a pencil line across the diagonal. Sew 1/4" on each
side of the pencil mark. Cut apart on the
pencil line. Press each square to the darker fabric. Square
up each
square to 2 1/2" each.
2. a. Make 8 light to medium units ( 4 light squares - 4 medium
squares)
b. Make 2 light to dark units (1 light
square - 1 dark square)
Step # 2
1. Sew to each side of 2 light to medium half squares
triangles one dark and one light triangle.
Stitch from outer edge to center
points as shown in diagram below:
* some of
the diagrams below are rather dark. Please refer to the finished block
at the top of the page if
necessary
2. Sew the larger dark triangle (cut from 4 1`/2" square)
to the opposite side to make a square unit as shown
below:
Step # 3
1. Sew together two of the light/ medium squares as shown below
: (make 2 units)
2. Sew together two units of light/dark to light/medium as
shown below: (Make 2 units)
3. Sew these new units to the unit made above as described
in diagram below: (make to completed units)

2. Square up to 8 1/2".
