Quilt Block of the Month
for
June, 1998

Anvil
This is a 4 patch block that is made using half square triangles and squares.  Choosing a good contrast in colors will be a fun way to construct this 12 1/2" (unfinished) block for your sampler.
Using the colors in the finished block shown above cut the following pieces:

1. Fabric Requirements:
   ...........red,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yellow....................................light brown.............................dark brown
1 - 7" square  1 - 7" square 2 - 3 1/2" 2 - 4" squares
2 - 4" squares

Step #1.  Making Half Square Triangles:

For this step you will be making half square triangles from the 4" red and dark brown squares.

1.Using the 2 red 4" squares and the 2 dark brown 4" square, place one red and one dark brown right sides together.    You will have 2 pairs. Sew each pair on the diagonal.  Draw a line on the diagonal of each pair and stitch 1/4" to each of the diagonal line drawn on each pair (as shown in diagram # 1).

 diagram # 1

2.  Cut apart on the diagonal line.
3.  Press open each half square triangle with the seams toward the darker fabric.
4.  Square up each square to 31/2".
5.  You should now have 4 -  3 1/2" half square triangles.

6.  Following the same instructions above use the 7" red and yellow squares.  Square up to 6 1/2".  You will have
     2 - 6 1/2" squares.

Step #2.  Assembly:

1.  Using the light brown 3 1/2" squares and the 3 1/2" half square triangles sew together as shown below:
square up these two sections to 6 1/2".

2.  Sew together all four sections as shown:

This finishes the June block of the Month!!!! I hope you enjoy this fun block!  See you next month!
