'Twas the Night Before Christmas ...
Mystery Quilt
installment #3

Now that you have completed Installment #1 and  Installment #2 you are now ready to proceed with the next installment.  In this installment you will be making several paper pieced blocks.  It was suggested (and greatly appreciated) that I include as many line to line measurements as possible since not all printers will print out to the correct dimensions as prescribed in my instructions.

 Step #1 (more chains)

This is an opportunity to use a variety of different light to medium (as well as some dark) scraps or smaller
pieces of holiday fabrics.  I have used a number of 2" strips for this step as well as a number of smaller 2"
wide pieces I have laying around here in my stash.  The instructions below will reflect using 2" x 44"strips.
(*note I also used a number of 8" squares I had here for these chains to provide more variety and colors)
1.   5 - 2" x 44" strips of your favorite holiday fabrics.
2.  Fold in half so each 44" strip is now 1" x 44".
3.  Sew with front sides together 1/4" seam along the entire 44" length.  Sew off one end with a 1/4" seam.
4.  Turn inside out this strip so that the seam is now on the inside of the tube.
5.  Cut into 4" lengths.   You will need  to make 2 chains one that will be 30 links and one with 40 links.
6.  Follow instructions from installment to make the chains *using a serger for this part is nice... but not a
     requirement.
7.  Turn all seams inward so they are hidden by the next link of the chain.  Clip any thread that hang off the chains

 Step 2 (more paper piecing)
1.    The blocks below are 3" square block (finished). You will need to add a 1/4" seam allowance.

 2.  Set aside for now and go onto the next paper pieced block:

Step # 3
1.  Cut 11  -  3 1/2"  squares of light background fabric.  Set aside for now.
2.  Cut 5 - 3 1/2" squares of dark midground fabric.  Set aside for now.

Step #4 (preparations for next installment)

1.  Start digging out decorative buttons... gold, sliver, colorful, christmas, what every you might have around.
since this quilt (wall hanging) is designed to use up may of the scraps you have in your stash... the buttons will
be something to add a bit of 'flair' in the steps to come.
2.  You will also need a variety of ribbons... these should be no wider than 1/4".  Color suggestions are red, green,
     silver, gold or deep blues.
3.  Scraps of light weight batting or felt.  If you are using a batting you want nothing thicker than "warm and
     natural.

This concludes installment #3.  Installment #4 will be posted for you on October 31st.  Have fun stitching!!!
