Mystery Quilt
installment #4
October 31, 1998
Now that you have completed Installment #1 Installment #2 and Installment #3  you are now ready to proceed with the next installment.

Step # 1.  Paper pieces - what to do???
1.  Match the background fabrics of each of you paper pieced blocks to the 3 1/2 squares you cut in the last
     installment.
2.  With the blocks you have made and the 3 1/2" square you cut in the last installment place fronts together sew
together with a  3 1/2" piece of batting. (making the quilt sandwich).  Sew on three sides   cut away any excess
batting then make a easy turn.
3.  Using a decorative piece of ribbon or cording, make a loop and center it to the top of the block. Or if making
the block on point place the ribbon on the upward point.
4.  Tack this ribbon in place with a couple of stitches.
5.  Cut away any excess batting on the top.
6.  Sew the top of the block closed  by hand stitching (blind stitch preferred)
7.   Embellishment of these block can be fun and I suggest you try.  Using buttons, ribbons, cording and other
fun Christmas flavors will brighten these blocks and be a lot of fun!

8.  Set these aside for now.

Step #2.  Making draw string bags:

1.   In this step you will make a variety of mock drawstring bags: It is fun to use a variety of different Christmas
fabrics for this step.  These bags can be made in a variety of sizes.  I will provide instructions for only one
size.   You will need 4-6 of these bags.  See the diagram below for a sampling of the finished bags.

2.  Cut a 4" x 8" rectangle of fabric.
3.  Sew a rolled hem at each end of the triangle.
4.  Sew with right sides together the side seams.
5. Turn out so that the front side shows.
6.    At this time you may want to put in your favorite holiday  popourri.  Of course this will provide a Christmas
fragrance for you finished wall hanging.
7.  Using a ribbon or cording tack it to the bag aprox 1" below the top  (further down for larger bags.)
8.  Tie into bow to close the bag securely.
9.  You may want to embellish these bags with glitter or other fun christmas items.

 Step # 3.  Appliqué pieces:

The appliquéd bells are made using the templates below.  Print out these templates on your computer as shown   make "four" sets of these bells.   You will also need some light to medium  weight iron-on interfacing.  see picture below:

1.  Using the templates below cut the number of pieces as specified on each template.

2. Cut the iron-on interfacing to the actual finished size of each piece without the seam this way the
seam allowance will be underneath the finished piece.

3.  Center the cut interfacing pieces squarely to the back side of each piece adhesive side to the fabric.  Press
around each piece the 1/4" seam allowance.

4.  Set aside for now these completed pieces.
