Block # 2

Sunlight and Shadows
    As the days get shorter and shorter  the warm rays of the sunshine give way to the early evening shadows of a cool evenings.  This is one of the better memories I have of September.  The time when school sessions begin again and summer vacations are over... but the memories are fresh when we look out to the stars.
   This block "Sunshine and Shadows"  encompasses all my September dreams.

* please make note that many of the fabric requirement are cut a bit larger than actually needed.  This will make it easier to square up the various pieces in each block.
 

fabric requirements:

2 - 2 1/2" light squares
2 - 3 1/2" light squares
2 - 2 1/2" medium squares
4 - 3 1/2" medium squares
4 - 2 1/2" dark squares
2 - 3 1/2" dark squares
 

Step # 1  make half square triangles:
 

1.  Following  diagram #1 to make half square triangles.  Mark a pencil line across the diagonal of the 3 1/2"
     squares.  Sew 1/4" on each  side of the pencil mark. Cut apart on the pencil line.  Press each square to the
     darker fabric.  Square up eachsquare to 2 1/2" each.

 2. Make half square triangles using:
     a. 2 - 3 1/2" light to 2 - 3 1/2" medium squares
     b.  2 - 3 1/2" medium to 2 - 3 1/2" dark squares
 


 

Step # 2

1.  Set up all of the now 2 1/2" squares using the diagram below:

2.  Sew in rows both vertically and horizontally.

3. Square up to 8 1/2".
