Quilt Block of the Month

 This block will measure 12 1/2" unfinished.  It is one more block in the series for this years annual quilt sampler.
 

Fabric Requirements:

Light:  1 -  9" x 6" rectangle
          1 - 3 1/2" square
          2 - 3" squares  (cut on diagonal)
Medium:  2 - 9" x 6" rectangles
               4 - 2 1/2" squares
               2 - 3 1/2" squares
Dark:  1 - 9" x 6" rectangle
           2 - 3" squares   (cut on diagonal)

Step #1.  Making Half Square Triangles:

For this step you will be making half square triangles from the 9" x 6"  light/medium and dark rectangles.

 1. Placing face to face the light / medium an dark /medium rectangles, draw pencil lines at 3 " increments (see diagram below).
  Draw a line on the diagonal of each set and stitch 1/4" to each of the diagonal line drawn on each set (as shown in diagram # 1).

2.  Cut apart on the diagonal line.
3.  Press open each half square triangle with the seams toward the darker fabric.
4.  Square up each square to 21/2".
5.  You should now have 12 - 2 1/2" half square triangles of both the light/medium and the dark/medium

Step 2. quarter to half square triangles:

1.  Place 3 1/2" squares of light/medium and dark/medium fronts together.
2.  Make pencil line on the diagonal as shown below, sew 1/4" to each side of pencil line.

3.  Press open each of these half square triangles.
4. Cut each half square triangle in half from center to point as shown below:

5.  sew together the newly made quarters to half square triangles to the diagonal cut 3" triangles as shown below:

6.  Square up to 2 1/2" all newly made squares.

Step 3. Assembly:

1.  Align all pieces, including the 4 2 1/2" squares as shown below.

2.  Sew together in rows vertically and horizontally to complete the block.
