"Think Spring" Mystery Quilt
part #3
What a glorious day!  I don't know yet if the Ground Hog will see his shadow or not... but the chances are he will this year.  We here in Michigan are enjoying our second mildest January ever recorded. I for one am very pleased!  The snowmobilers however and ice fishermen are not so happy with this warm weather.  Now this is not to say we have not had our share of snow!  The 8" from early last week are finally disappearing as the warmth of the sun melts it away.
Soon the spring bulbs will begin to pop their heads through the soil and I know that Spring will be just around the corner.  So I am   already "Thinking Spring" in a joyful anticipation of the burst of color that is to come soon.

This weeks installment will again be a simple one. (Not that any of the installments will be difficult).  If you have not completed  step 1  and  step 2  you will need to do so before progressing on to this step.

Step #1.
  Making 4-Patches:

You will be making four 4-patch sections. (see diagram #2 below).

1. using the 1 1/2" pink and the 1 1/2" purple pieces stitch them together to make four 4-patches that look like this:

diagram #2

2. Square up each 4-patch unit to measure 2 1/2" square.  Set these pieces aside for now.

Step #2.

For this step you will be making half square triangles from the 3" purple and pink squares.

1.Using the 4 purple 3" squares and the 4 pink 3" square, place one pink and one purple right sides together.    You will have 4 pairs sew each pair on the diagonal.  Draw a line on the diagonal of each pair and stitch 1/4" to each of the diagonal line drawn on each pair (as shown in diagram # 3).

2.  Cut apart on the diagonal line.
3.  Press open each half square triangle with the seams toward the darker fabric.
4.  Square up each square to 2 1/2".
5.  You should now have 8 -  2 1/2" half square triangles.

This is all for now!  You have completed installment #3.   Installment #4 will be available on Feb 9, 1998.  See you then.
