This is one of those patterns
that has more than one name, as it has been handed down over the years.
Sometimes it is know as King David's Crown. There are other versions,
as is the case with so many patterns.
Also know as Job's Tears, or Job's
Troubles, the name refers to Job, the Old Testament character, who as a
righteous man, came to suffer terrible physical and spiritual afflictions.
He finally was humbled before God before regaining his former successful
and healthy state. The Book of Job is considered a great work of
poetry, as well as a study of a universal theme: why do good people suffer.
Perhaps the four points extending into
the corners of the block represent the breadth of Job's material possessions
and wealth, fragmented by the four intersecting lines representing a cross
or perhaps God. At the center is Job himself in juxtaposition to
his fragmented life and to God.

Sewing Instructions:
Again this pattern is being done using templates. Please refer to the finished block diagram at the top of the page.
Sew together #3 and #4. Two pieces of #3 are sewn, one on each side of the piece #4. Make 4 squared sections of these pieces. (see diagram #5 below).
Diagram #5
by laying right sides together sew the sections in diagram #5 to piece
#2. Without stopping your seam after sewing the first two pieces
together sew another piece horizontally to the center square #1.
continue down with your seam sewing another #2 and #5. Repeat this
process on the other side to sew all four of the #5's to the central pieces
of the block..
Now sew across the horizontal seams to finish the block.
(hopefully my instructions are getting better).
This completed block should measure 12 1/2"
