Tree of Life

The Tree of Life symbolizes many aspects of each persons faith life.  Going Back to Genesis the tree of truth and knowledge was defined as the "Tree of Life" from the serpents tongue.  For Christians the "Tree of Life" came to symbolize our walk with Christ.

This block is a 12" block. It will be 12 1/2" unfinished in size.  It requires two different fabrics. One Light and one Dark.

********Before Cutting your fabric please read all the directions for cutting the half square triangles... There are two different methods shown to make your squares. The fabric requirements are unchanged.****************

   Dark Fabric                                         Light Fabric
9" x 18"  9" x 18"

Cutting Instructions:

8 1/2" x 8 1/2" square  7 1/2 " x  7 1/2" square
9 -  3" x 3" squares 9 - 3" x 3" squares
2 - 2 1/2" squares 2 - 2 1/2" squares

****Alternate  cutting instructions:

8 1/2" x 8 1/2" square 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" square
9" x 9" square 9" x 9" square

Step #1  Making the half square triangles:

For this step you will be making half square triangles from the 3" light and dark squares.

1.Using the  nine  3" squares,  place one dark and one one right sides together.    You will have 9 pairs sew each pair on the diagonal.  Draw a line on the diagonal of each pair and stitch 1/4" to each of the diagonal line drawn on each pair (as shown in diagram # 3).

 diagram # 1

2.  Cut apart on the diagonal line.
3.  Press open each half square triangle with the seams toward the darker fabric.
4.  Square up each square to 2 1/2".
5.  You should now have 18 -  2 1/2" half square triangles.

**** Alternate method for making your half square triangles*******

1. Using the 9" squares, place them front sides together.  Using a pencil, draw lines both vertically and horizontally every 3".  Then draw lines on the diagonal as shown in the diagram below.  Sew 1/4" to each side of the lines.  Cut apart on the lines.

This will give you 18  have 2 1/2" square triangles.
 .      diagram #2
2. Press open so that the seam is toward the dark fabric.
3. Square up you pieces to 2 1/2".
4.  Assembly line sew together two rows of 4 of the half square triangles.  Make sure they are going in the same
direction as illustrated in the finished block.

Step #2 making the tree and trunk:

1.  Cut the 8 1/2" square of the dark fabric on the diagonal.  Making two triangles.

2..  Cut the 7 1/2" light square on both diagonals as shown in the diagram below:

You will only be needing two of these triangles.  Set the other two pieces aside to use in another
  diagram #3         quilting project. :).

3. .  Cut away the two sides of the dark fabric. This will leave you the trunk of the tree in the shape shown below.
                                    cut away this triangle
.                                                                  .  cut away this triangle.
                                                 .                           diagram # 4

The outer edges to be cut away are 6 1/4" from corner to the cut away poing on

4.  After you have cut away the triangles on the sides, you should have the trunk of the tree.
5.  Sew the two light triangles to the trunk piece, using a 1/4" seam  to the area where you just cut away the dark
triangles.  Begin sewing your pieces from the inside to the ootside edge.Press with seams toward the darker        fabric.  Square   up your newly created large triangle to 8 1/2" on the outer sides.

6.  With front sides together  sew together the dark triangle to the pieced triangle you just completed.
Press, and square up this square to 8 1/2".  Look at the finished block at the top of the page to see
     how this section should  look.

Step # 3  Block assembly:

1.  With the remaining two half square triangles make a 4 patch using the two dark 2 1/2" squares as
     illustrated below:
   .
.                                           diagram # 5

2.   Sew together this 4 patch to the left side of the top row of your 4 half square triangles as shown below:

.           diagram # 6

3.   Attach the remaining 4 half square triangle section to the right vertical side of the large pieced triangle as
shown in the finished block at the top of the page.

4.  Sew across the top the section of half square triangles with the 4-patch attached to complete the block.

5.  Press and square up to 12 1/2".

This completes this block.
